May is Military Appreciation Month. One way we here at the Baker County Chamber of Commerce show our appreciation for the incredible sacrifices made by our nation's military servicemen, servicewomen and veterans is by helping them set up shop with their own successful businesses.

Statistics from the US Small Business Administration show that veterans make significant contributions to our nation's economy via entrepreneurship. The most current data reveals that there are 2.4 million veteran-owned firms in the US and that those firms employ some 5.8 million workers. And, results of an SBA study show that veterans are 45 percent more likely to be self-employed than are non-veterans.

The top 10 industries for veterans-turned-entrepreneurs are:

  1. Finance and insurance
  2. Transportation and warehousing
  3. Mining, quarrying, oil and gas
  4. Construction
  5. Professional, scientific and technical
  6. Manufacturing
  7. Wholesale trade
  8. Agriculture, forestry and fishing
  9. Utilities
  10. Real estate

If you're a military veteran, service member or Reservist interested in starting or growing a business of your own, join the Baker County Chamber of Commerce online or call 904-259-6433 to speak with a membership specialist today.
